Wii Sports Resort. How to Change paddles? Table Tennis?

As I noticed whilst playing table tennis, one of the opponents I faced had a completely different paddle than normal. It was padded and made a deeper thunk sound when the ball played off of it. Is there any way to change paddles? Like in-between loads or warning screens holding down 2 or something?

Well you can use a slipper by holding "1" at the Mii confirmation screen and let go at the warning screen.
